They say lightning never strikes twice in the same place. That was not true for the Accardi family. They were recently given devastating news that has drastically changed their lives. Both of their young sons were diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type II (SMA). Nicholas, 28 months, and Tyler, 12 months, were both afflicted with this rare genetic disease that affects voluntary muscle movements such as crawling and walking. The disease also affects head and neck control as well as respiratory function. 1 in 40 perople are carriers, causing SMA in 1 in 6,000 children. There are four types to this disease with type 1 being most severe. While the life expectancy of children born with SMA type II may be adulthood, it remains uncertain and varies. SMA is the #1 killer in infants under the age of two.
Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is a condition that causes nerve cells in the lower part of the brain and spinal cord to break down and die. When this happens, the brain stops sending signals to the body's muscles. When the muscles don't get direction on how to move, they become inactive, get smaller, and begin to waste away (a condition known as atrophy). Research has been done to identify the genes that cause SMA, but currently, there's still no cure for the disease.
Children born with this disease require a lifetime of support from a team of medical professionals as well as therapists. They also require a great deal of costly medical equipment and assistive technology that is not fully covered by insurance companies; if covered at all. The devastation that this family has faces in unimaginable and they need your support. As a community we can make a difference. We ask that you help ensure the boys receive all the medical equipment they need to sustain a healthy quality of life. Please consider making a donation to help Nicholas and Tyler in their fight against SMA.
