5 Atlanta homes that embody mid-century modern retro luxury

By Merlisa Lawrence Corbett

From The Atlanta-Journal Constitution

Among the many home styles in metro Atlanta, midcentury modern is probably the one most associated with pop culture.

Sometimes referred to as retro, midcentury modern is more than a design category. It's a lifestyle that reflects the evolution of the post-World War II modern family.

Midcentury design incorporates sleek, functional and multipurpose furnishings. You've seen this style in the offices in Mad Men, The Brady Bunch kitchen and the Stephens' living room in Bewitched.

Elements of midcentury modern design include sliding doors, open floor plans and the seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Although simplistic and a throwback to a bygone era, midcentury modern isn't stale or outdated. On the contrary, the best midcentury modern interiors are timeless and bold.

The following five Atlanta homes showcase the simple, yet luxurious side of midcentury modern design.

Haute Hillside

A wall of cabinets floats in this open-concept kitchen.

Architectural and design firm Jeffrey Bruce Baker collaborated with Wise Builders, LLC to construct a midcentury modern home with an eclectic interior. The home's stunning kitchen features a floating wall of cabinets.

Jeffrey Baker said the back of that wall contains an open catering pantry where the homeowners can stock dishes and small appliances. The kitchen island's granite countertops with waterfall edge provides a weighty focal point and anchors the space. Custom pendant lights above the island are made of reclaimed wine barrel staves and hoops.

Modern Morningside

This kitchen and dining area blends warm and sleek design elements.

Cablik Enterprises designed this gorgeous dinning room and kitchen space that embodies the simple elegance of midcentury modern. Massive windows provide tons of natural light in this sun-drenched open-concept living area. Sleek surfaces such as the glass table and kitchen cabinetry complement texture found in the fireplace surround and wide-plank wood floors.

Easy East Atlanta

Epic Development designed a minimalist mid-century modern living space in this East Atlanta home.

The dining and living room in this East Atlanta home is an example how outdoor elements are incorporated into midcentury interior design. Epic Development, the contractor on this project, mixed new and vintage furnishings for a cohesive look. The dining chairs are originals one of the homeowners inherited from grandparents.

Virginia Highland Modern Exterior

Architect Robert Cain designed this gem that was featured in the MA Atlanta's residential home tour. Built by Cablik Enterprises, the exterior of this midcentury modern home features design elements consistent with Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired architecture. The Adirondack chairs complement the neon-green door.

Druid Hills Mod

This Druid Hills home's open floor plan makes a splendid canvas for mid-century modern furnishings.

Renewal Design-Build collaborated with the homeowners to renovate this 1950s home in Druid Hills. The arm chairs, wood beams and credenza behind the sofa are all typical of midcentury modern design.
