A Florida fifth-grader is being called a hero after rescuing three other students trapped inside a partially submerged bus near Tampa.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, the school bus was carrying 27 students from Mary E. Bryant Elementary School on Thursday when it went off the road and careened into a shallow pond.

That's when Nicholas Sierra sprang into action. The 10-year-old safety patrol member grabbed a kindergartner and carried her to safety, then returned to the bus and pulled out two other students, the Times reported.

"It wouldn't be fair if they died and I lived," he said.

The Sheriff's Office does not know what caused the accident but said witnesses saw the driver, 54-year-old Lenoir Sainfimin, push the brakes, the Tampa Tribune reported. Sainfimin, who has not been charged, remained on the bus until all 27 children were safe, according to ABC News. The investigation is ongoing.
