Cowboys add “coach’s dream” player formerly signed by Patriots

Early February does not usually produce a ton of player movement in the NFL but, on Thursday, a roster move came to pass that could be potentially interesting. Former New England Patriots rookie free agent Jason Thompson, who was cut just prior to the 2017 season, was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys.

Thompson, who emerged as a college safety from the Utah Utes, was originally recruited at the college level as a quarterback and, as you may expect, that indicates he has a varied and interesting skill set. It remains to be seen as to what the Cowboys envision for the still-young defensive back but the Salt Lake Tribune brings word from his Utah defensive coordinator in saying that Thompson is “a coach’s dream” in virtually every way.

“He’s a coach’s dream, as far as being team-first and I’ll-do-whatever-you-ask-me-to-do. And he’ll do it 100 percent. You look at his notebook — copious notes. It’s about all the little details, and that’s why you can trust him.”

Dallas is known for its star power and Thompson doesn’t fit that bill. What he can bring, though, is a solid, versatile piece that could add to the locker room culture and, in February, every little thing counts.
