Ricky Gervais Hosting the Golden Globes Bad or Brilliant?

By Webmaster

Before the Golden Globes even ended Sunday night, all the buzz was about comedian host Ricky Gervais. Of course he made fun of easy targets like Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson, but he also roasted untouchables like Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Bruce Willis and many more. He even skewered the president of the sponsoring organization (The Hollywood Foreign Press Association). His act was so controversial that when he disappeared backstage for almost a full hour during the broadcast, many in the audience speculated on Twitter, that he'd been fired right in the middle of the show!

Despite celebrity push back from Tom Hanks ("... we recall back when Ricky Gervais was a slightly chubby but very kind comedian, nether of which is he now") and Robert Downey Jr. (Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say the vibe of the show has been pretty good so far, wouldn't you?"), many critics are calling Gervais' performance brilliant and compelling! What do you think? Did he go too far or did the laughs justify the rudeness? Leave a comment and join the discussion.

If you missed the show, here's a medley of some of the funniest moments.
