Putting a yellow ribbon magnet on the back of your car AIN'T ENUFF!! The 6th Annual Tribute to fallen Long Island soldier James McNaughton is this Saturday (1/22) at Mulcahy's in Wantagh. RSVP on Facebook. Events like these often buoy the families of the fallen and give them purpose.
Click through for James' story and video about his dad that will warm your heart and break it at the same time.
Vinny Zecca, one of James' best friends writes this:
James D. McNaughton was a New York City Police Officer who was killed in Iraq. Jimmy was a Staff Sergeant with the Army Reserve's 306th Military Police Battalion, based out of Uniondale, Long Island. Coming from a family of police officers, he joined the NYPD as a member of the first Police Academy class to graduate after 9/11. He was assigned to Transit Bureau, District 2 in Lower Manhattan. He reported for duty in the Army on October 4th, 2002. On August 2nd, 2005, Jimmy's Unit was assigned a dangerous mission. When the high risk assignment came down to McNaughton or a couple of other staff sergeants, Jimmy volunteered over the other soldiers because they had children and he didn't. While on this mission, Jimmy was training an Iraqi officer up in a tower and was struck by a sniper. James McNaughton, 27, was the first New York City Cop to give his life for his country as a soldier in the line of duty while serving in Iraq.
I have known Jimmy since we were 8 years old. He is my best friend and the most loyal person that I have ever met. Most of the stories that have been written or told about Jimmy have spoken of how great a hero he is or how dedicated he was to this country and that he had red, white and blue running through his blood. This is all indeed very true. However, what usually goes unwritten and untold is how great of a person and friend to so many of us Jimmy was. The heroism that Jimmy showed as a police officer and a soldier for this country was equaled by his loyalty and dedication to his family and friends. Jimmy lived for this country for as long as I can remember and he died defending the freedoms that we enjoy every day.
Over the past 5 years, we have held a benefit/fundraiser event in honor of Jimmy's memory. The tremendous amount of success that this event has had has been truly overwhelming to Jimmy's family. This success could not have been achieved without the incredible amount of support that we have received from the entire community, including the local and city Police Departments, local businesses, the United States Army, and all of the performers that have generously come down and entertained all of the troops, members of numerous law enforcement agencies, and Jimmy's family and friends in attendance. We have also received an enormous amount of press for this event from newspapers, radio stations, the internet, television news, and even from radio shows such as the Howard Stern Show. The success of this event is also due to the large amount of support that we have received from radio station WBAB.
Over the past few years, we have had an assortment of entertainment and appearances from the likes of comedians Dave Attell, Nick DiPaolo, Colin Quinn, then Senator Hilary Clinton, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, numerous professional athletes, the USO, and the New York Shields Pipes and Drums Band, among others. The amazing part of this list is that more than half of them have reached out to the McNaughton family requesting to be a part of this great event.
This year will mark the 5 Year Anniversary of Jimmy's passing. So we are really hoping to make this year's event extremely special and bigger then what we have done in the previous years. Unfortunately, I know that in a lot of cases as time goes by more and more people tend to forget. This is something that we are trying to prevent from happening. We want to keep Jimmy's memory alive and with the amount of people attending this event increasing each year, I think it's a true homage to the type of person that Jimmy was and how many lives he touched.
The event itself, will take place on Saturday afternoon, January 22nd, 2011, at Mulcahy's in Wantagh, NY, from 1pm to 8pm. The proceeds from the event will be donated to multiple great charities - The Wounded Warrior Project, The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, 911 Vets and The James McNaughton Foundation. The Wounded Warriors Project seeks to assist those men and women of our armed forces who have been severely injured during the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other locations around the world. The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund has provided more than $65 million in support for the families of military personnel lost in service to our nation, and for severely wounded military personnel and veterans. The 911 Vets Organization assists those returning from the Global War on Terrorism as well as those who served in other eras. The James McNaughton Foundation helps to provide scholarships to men and women who serve in the NYPD. At last year's event, we were able to raise over $30,000 and we obviously would love to shatter that number this year.
