Van Halen Rocks The Café Wha? AND New York Critics. By Donna Donna
Van Halen warmed up for their forthcoming arena tour with a 45 minute showcase for the press at the tiny Café Wha? In the west Village last night and handily won over the notoriously discriminating New York journalists present.
Jim Farber from the Daily News said:
“The chunkiness of Eddie’s riffs played ideally against Roth's gasping scats…”
Jon Pareles in The New York Times raved:
“Van Halen is still one of the most limber bands in hard rock…Eddie Van Halen’s guitar is in constant, multiple-personality dialogue with itself; riffing power chords and then replying with leads that wriggle from the whammy bar, scamper in notes tapped on the fingerboard or screech from a scrape up a string.
And according to Glen Gamboa in Newsday:
”Shortly before the band finished with “Jump,” Roth tried summing up the night for everyone again. “It's one of the best shows in our entire career,” he said.
