Drop the Drink and Put Your Hands Up! Super-Size Sodas Against the Law!? By Donna Donna
New York City’s controversial “Soda Ban ” decision is expected today, and while many are screaming that Mayor Bloomberg is overstepping his authority and infringing on our freedom to swill as many empty calories as we want, others say obesity is a public health crisis.
According to USA Today the obesity epidemic costs society “$300 billion a year in the United States and Canada as a result of: increased need for medical care ($127 billion); loss of worker productivity due to higher rates of death ($49 billion); loss of productivity due to disability of active workers ($43 billion); and loss of productivity due to total disability ($72 billion).”
