As Aerosmith's songwriters, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry will be awarded the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers' (ASCAP) prestigious Founders Award on April 17 in Los Angeles at ASCAP's 30th annual Pop Music Awards. 

ASCAP president and chairman Paul Williams said in a statement "As part of one of our nation's greatest and most iconic rock bands, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry crafted the music that defined a generation and continues to inspire songwriters today...they are true musical pioneers whose contributions to American songwriting are immeasurable. We are extremely proud to honor these cultural icons." 

According to ascap.com "The ASCAP Founders Award "is given to songwriters and composers who have made pioneering contributions to music by inspiring and influencing their fellow music creators. Each recipient is a musical innovator who possesses a unique style of creative genius, which will enrich generations to come." 

I have to agree that Aerosmith are "one of our nations greatest rock bands." But musical pioneers? Innovative? I'm not so sure. When I think of "inspiring" musical pioneers, the Beatles and Bob Dylan (both of whom have won this award) come to mind, as well as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Van Halen. What do you think?
