The annual Jimmy McNaughton tribute raises money every year for the Wounded Warrior Project, 9-1-1 Veterans and Jimmy's scholarship fund.

The event is tomorrow (1/19), at Mulcahy’s in Wantagh from 1PM – 8PM. There’s live music from the Nerds, free food, drink specials, tons of great raffle prizes and more.

Here’s Jimmy’s story: James D. McNaughton was a New York City police officer from Centereach who was killed in Iraq in 2005. Jimmy joined the Army in the summer of 1996. He served 5 years in the military and was honorably discharged in the summer of 2001, but not before enlisting in the reserves. 

He joined the NYPD the very next day as a member of the first Police Academy class to graduate after 9/11. He was assigned to Transit Bureau, District 2 in Lower Manhattan. He was activated by the Army shortly after for his first deployment from October 2002 through 2003 for a secret mission in Maryland. 

Jimmy was disappointed that he wasn’t over in Iraq, because to him going to serve in Iraq was like playing in the Super Bowl.  So in 2004 when the opportunity arose, he volunteered for deployment to Abu Ghraib. On August 2nd, 2005, Jimmy's Unit was assigned a dangerous mission, the choice for the mission came down to him and a couple other Sergeants. Jimmy volunteered because he knew the other soldiers had children and he knew the severity of the mission.

While on this mission, Jimmy was training an Iraqi officer up in a tower and was struck by a sniper. James McNaughton, 27, was the first New York City Cop to give his life for his country as a soldier in the line of duty while serving in Iraq.
