At least when it comes to ad revenue, the NCAA is bigger than the NFL.

According to media research specialist Kantar Media, the NCAA men's basketball tournament made $1 billion last year, making it bigger than any professional post-season sports championship.

Jon Swallen, chief research officer at Kantar says, "Football may be the national pastime, but college basketball is in the driver's seat."

According to Kantar: the NFL post-season took in $976 million in TV ad spending last year, the NBA's postseason totaled $537 million, and Major League Baseball was a distant third at $354 million.

So why do we love March Madness so much? Advertising and pop culture columnist Barbara Lippert says, "People want to believe in something...you get to see these kids before they get all corrupt."  She adds, "More upsets and crazy things happen in college sports...that's why they call it March Madness."
