Back like ‘Clockwork’ and just in time

Whoever coined the phrase ‘It’s a young man’s world’ clearly didn’t send the memo to Van Halen and Rush because they’ve released two of the best albums of 2012.

VH was first out of the gate with ‘A Different Kind of Truth’. And now, Geddy, Alex and Neil have hit pay dirt with ‘Clockwork Angels’

The first thing I noticed is how clear and crisp the sound quality is, a notable improvement from their last two discs. Much of the credit has to go to producer Nick Raskulinecz.

Second, of course, is the holy triumvirate themselves.  My opinion is obviously skewed because of my huge Rush dork-dom.  But they haven’t sounded this good in a long time. I think this is their best disc since ‘Presto’ (my all-time favorite).

There is hope for new music, after all. Given the sorry state of the industry these days, it couldn’t have come soon enough.  Leave it to three legendary Canadians to show us how it’s supposed to be done.

Highlights:

  • -- ‘Caravan’: A thunderous opener; an all-time favorite that sounds fantastic live.
  • -- ‘The Wreckers’: easily the most radio-friendly tune, I LOVE the chorus.
  • -- ‘Clockwork Angels’: the title track is, in a word, F#&?IN EPIC!
