Detective Dennis Wunsch is this weeks First Responder Friday nominee. “Detective Dennis R. Wunsch has honorably served the Nassau County Police Department for over two decades, including the past 11 years in the Detective Division, where he has distinguished himself as an elite investigator specializing in homicide, transnational theft organizations, and gang-related violence.
Designated a Detective in 2014 and initially assigned to the Third Squad, Detective Wunsch successfully investigated and closed well over a thousand cases spanning the full spectrum of criminal activity. His work included conducting hundreds of interviews and interrogations, executing identification procedures, and providing critical courtroom testimony that directly contributed to the successful prosecution of violent offenders. He earned a reputation among prosecutors and law enforcement partners as a highly reliable and effective investigative professional.
In 2018, Detective Wunsch was assigned to the Major Case Bureau’s Burglary Pattern Squad, where he focused on complex residential and commercial burglary patterns. He played a lead role in identifying and dismantling sophisticated South American Theft Groups operating throughout Nassau County and the greater tri-state area. Through surveillance operations, GPS tracking, forensic evidence, and interagency intelligence sharing, he helped apprehend organized burglary crews responsible for millions of dollars in stolen property. His investigative work extended nationally, coordinating with federal partners including the FBI, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and ICE to combat international theft networks entering the United States.
Promoted to the Homicide Squad in 2021, Detective Wunsch assumed responsibility for investigating criminal homicides, in-custody deaths, and police-involved shootings. He has served in multiple leadership roles within homicide investigations, including scene lead and video lead, working collaboratively with local, state, and federal partners.
Detective Wunsch played a critical role in several high-profile MS-13 homicide investigations spanning multiple jurisdictions. His investigative efforts helped identify gang members responsible for brutal murders in Nassau County and contributed to large-scale federal racketeering indictments. These cases resulted in extensive multi-defendant federal charges, including murder, conspiracy, firearms, and narcotics trafficking offenses, culminating in coordinated arrests across several states.
Additionally, Detective Wunsch helped advance long-term missing person homicide investigations, working with federal and regional partners to secure indictments against MS-13 leadership tied to multiple murders. His work also assisted in locating homicide victims through coordinated search operations involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
Throughout his career, Detective Wunsch has demonstrated exceptional investigative skill, leadership, and dedication to public safety. His ability to build strategic partnerships across local and federal agencies has been instrumental in solving violent crimes, dismantling organized criminal enterprises, and delivering justice to victims and their families.”
