James Dawson | Honoree for May 12th, 2023

James was nominated by his sister, Heather Dawson, who said “My brother always wanted to be a firefighter, from when he was old enough to talk. We all thought that time had passed for James, but at an age when most guys want to take it easy, my brother enthusiastically committed to the rigorous training to become a Volunteer Firefighter. He would practice tying knots, excitedly tell us stories of the training environments & was so proud when he became a full member of the firehouse. We all shared his pride. He juggles so much: his job as a NYC school teacher, his first responder duties for Fair Harbor Fire Department on Fire Island, his work with his son’s hockey league, he’s an amazing husband and dad & still carved out time to care for our dad in his last year. James speaks frequently of the deep and lasting friendships he has made with the other firefighters. This work and these relationships enrich his life greatly.”
