James Haven is this weeks’ First Responder Friday Nominee. “Police Officer James Havens received the 2025 Lifesaving Award as a “PBA TOP COP OF THE YEAR”
On March 10th 2025 Officer James Havens of the First Precinct responded to an auto accident in Baldwin involving a pedestrian struck. Upon arriving at scene Officer Havens found a 20-yr old pedestrian semi-conscious and suffering from a severe laceration with a double arterial bleed to his right arm. The victim was bleeding heavily. Officer Havens, who is also a volunteer firefighter, sprung into action providing life-saving care. Officer Havens correctly determined that a tourniquet could not be used and he then retrieved his own medical kit and supplies above and beyond what is required by the department. Officer Havens than treated the laceration with a wound pack and quick clot that successfully controlled the bleeding until medics arrived on scene. Over the next few weeks the victim required multiple life saving surgeries and doctors at the hospital indicated that the actions of Officer Havens directly saved the young mans life. The victim in later news stories stated that “I had 5 minutes left to live”. Thanks to Officer James Havens quick response, action and preparation above and beyond the call of duty this young man’s life was saved.
