John Jensen | Honoree for February 10th, 2023

This week’s honoree is Police Officer John Jensen. He was nominated because, “he was hired by SCPD in June 2010. Officer Jensen was assigned to 3rd precinct until 2018 when he transferred to firearms training section. In 2020, he transferred to Emergency Service and in 2022 became a part of the rescue swimmer team. Prior to the police department, he was a Jones Beach lifeguard assigned to Orient Point, Heckscher, Sunken Meadow and Robert Moses state parks.

P.O. John Jensen and P.O. Victor Federico were involved in a water rescue 1/15/23. A subject was in the water when his kayak overturned, the water temperature was 40 degrees. P.O. Jensen, as the rescue swimmer, jumped from a helicopter into the frigid water and swam to the stranded subject. When it was apparent no rescue boats could get to the location, P.O. Jensen swam the subject to Pattersquash Island and with the assistance of P.O. Federico, drag the subject out of the water and begin life saving measures. The P.O’s were assisted by civilian paramedic Erin Carey and flying the helicopter was SGT. John Vahey.”

John, thanks for all you do for the community. As a way of saying thanks, you will receive a $100 gift card for Moe’s Southwest Grill.
