‘Out of Adversity Comes Opportunity’

‘’You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours”: the Genesis edition’ took place 40 years ago this month.

After Peter Gabriel stuck around for the entirety of Genesis’ Lamb Lies Down on Broadway tour even after telling his bandmates he was leaving a few shows in back in 1974, his former comrades stepped in when Gabriel needed a hand some years later. Gabriel’s inaugural WOMAD fundraiser show lost a ton of money so management decided a part Genesis reunion, part WOMAD benefit would help them dig out of the financial hole.

The favor was returned as part of Six of the Bestin October 1982. Despite shitty weather all day, Gabriel, Collins, Rutherford, Banks, Daryl Steurmer and Chester Thompson played together for two hours and were joined by Steve Hackett in a surprise appearance (on “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)” and “The Knife”).

Oh, how I wish I was there!! Granted, I was only nine and living in another continent at the time. But still!

Mike Rutherford once said his biggest regret about “Six of the Best” is that the evening wasn’t recorded for posterity. UM, YEAH! Luckily we have bootlegs online to wipe away that regret!
