Fresh off chatting up my favorite tunes of 2018, the logical next step for me would be to close out the year by hyping up some of the new music I’m looking forward to in the coming year.

One band I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a return to form is Dream Theater. As badly as I wanted to love it, The Astonishing, a prog nerd's dream conceptually, was a disappointment for me. But the new tune off Dream Theater's new disc, Distance Over Time (due February 22) is a strong step in the right direction:

Another guy who I think has been on a tear of late is Genesis Hall of Famer Steve Hackett. And he keeps the momentum going with the first killer tune off of his next album, At The Edge Of Light (due January 25):

Other albums I'm psyched for that are in the works include Anthrax, who have been recording some of the best music of their career with their last two albums,…

,…Rage Against The Machine offshoot Prophets Of Rage, who exploded with an excellent debut album two years ago,…

,…and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who have been working on a follow-up to their pleasantly surprising last album, The Getaway.

What new albums are you looking most forward to in 2019?
