Most of the talk around one of my favorite bands, Genesis, has been around Phil Collins’ return to touring and deservedly so. But one guy who has quietly released some excellent music over the last several years has been Steve Hackett. And he has a new one out in January (the first new tune off it is terrific, by the way).
I am one of those Genesis nerds who feel do his contributions to the band were marginalized and because of that, Hackett is definitely one of rock and roll’s unsung hereos. He’s responsible (along with Tony Banks) for my all time favorite Genesis tune, which is a beautiful masterpiece.
Another of my other unsung heroes include George Harrison, both for his underrated work with the Fab Four and his solo catalog.
Also high on this list for me is late, great Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright. One of the main reasons “Shine On” is my favorite Floyd tune is his marvelous work on the track, especially the latter half of the tune.
