Styx are out on the road this summer sharing the bill with Chicago. Both bands hailing from Chicago explain why they named this trek, The Windy Cities tour. We recently caught up with Styx keyboard player Lawrence Gowan to discuss the tour. Lawrence was on the road with his other band “Gowan” when we spoke.
In the 27 years since Lawrence has been a part of Styx, the band has undergone somewhat of a rebirth. In recent years, the band has dropped some albums that fans are connecting to in considerable numbers. We had a chance to discuss the writing process in the band these days. Lawrence let us know “When Tommy Shaw, myself and Will Evankovich, you know because we’re the three primary writers, particularly when we write something together, we come up with things that just wouldn’t exist if any one of us tried to do it on our own.” It shows that Syx as a unit is very much still alive. In fact, Lawrence commented that “In some ways it’s the same band. There seems to be that classic through line.”
When we had the chance to talk, the tour had not yet begun. We did inquire about the possibility of jamming between the bands for the live show, but as Lawrence shared, “That might happen. We can never promise it. Usually, if those things do arise, they’re more toward the end of the tour because both bands have honed really carefully. There are ninety minutes that we each have. So, there’s three hours of classic rock on stage every single night.”
