“Her grandpa was a preacher, my father was a preacher, we both grew up singing and playing guitar in church, and we’re both known for some of the…biggest…songs in our fields,” Perry told the crowd.

Perry explained that she was reintroduced to the song “Coat of Many Colors” via the 2015 TV movie that was being honored. According to Perry , one line from the film stood out to her — “If I can hold God’s attention, I can hold the world's.”

Though the two had never met each other prior to the ACM Awards weekend, Parton said she was going to feel right at home singing along with the much younger singer.

“I know [Perry] comes to Dollywood, brings her friends,” Parton explained to Rolling Stone. “I’ve tried to get to do some things before and it never worked out with our schedules. But I know she grew up in a spiritual family. … I think her daddy was preacher or something like that. I think she relates to me in that respect. I don’t know her yet, but I hope to get to and maybe we’ll get a chance to do something.”

After receiving a standing ovation after getting the award, Parton explained that she didn’t deserve one.

“I don’t think I’m all that, but thank you for the standing ovation.”
