Ebony Smith took the greeting cards, pocketing $50 to $100 a week, WITI reported

Residents began to wonder about their missing greeting cards, which started a U.S.  Inspection Service investigation.

Investigators sent a special blue envelope containing $20. When Smith opened it, a signal was sent to officials.

Investigators approached her outside of her vehicle where they found 31 greeting cards and 23 other cards near the front seat, WITI reported. The $20 was gone.

Her minivan was towed to a scrapyard, where workers found 6,625 greeting card envelopes and 540 personal checks.

Smith is awaiting sentencing.
