Student dies after being shot outside Pittsburgh school; 2 sought

PITTSBURGH — A student died from his wounds after being shot Wednesday afternoon outside Pittsburgh’s Oliver Citywide Academy, according to WPXI.

The incident happened around the time classes were dismissed for the day, Pittsburgh Public Schools officials told WPXI. Two people approached a school van and shot into the van, injuring a 15-year-old boy inside, according to the news station.

Update 11:28 p.m. EST Jan. 19: Police said that the student was shot twice in the chest, WPXI-TV reported. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and died just before 5:30 p.m. EST, police confirmed to the television station.

“Today was nothing short of a tragedy,” interim Pittsburgh Public Schools superintendent Wayne Walters said during a virtual news conference. “I stand with the leaders of the school. As a former principal, I know just the possibility of an incident like today is something that keeps us up at night.”

Oliver Citywide Academy went into lockdown after the shots were fired, WPXI reported. Police said the lockdown was lifted around 3:10 p.m.

Authorities told WPXI that they are looking for two suspects in connection to the shooting. No suspects were immediately taken into custody.

Oliver Citywide Academy is a special education center serving students in grades three through 12, according to Pittsburgh Public Schools. As of Oct. 1, about 105 students were enrolled at the school, officials said.
