2-year-old shoots parents inside Maine home, sheriff says

WEST BATH, Maine — A West Bath, Maine, couple was wounded Wednesday when their 2-year-old reportedly shot them with a handgun.

“The question of how the boy was able to pick up and fire the weapon is of great concern and is being investigated,” Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry told WGME.

“This situation, while disturbing, could have had an even more tragic ending. We are thankful that the injuries were not more serious,” he added

The sheriff’s office confirmed to WMTW that the 22-year-old mother suffered a leg injury in the shooting; the 25-year-old father suffered a minor injury to the back of his head; and the child was struck in the face by the weapon’s recoil.

All three victims were transported to an area hospital for medical treatment, but the injuries are not considered life-threatening, the TV station reported.

According to investigators, the gun was unsecured on a nightstand prior to the shooting, WGME reported.

Investigators also confirmed that a 3-week-old baby was in the room at the time of the shooting and has since been placed in the custody of the grandmother, who also lives at the house but was not home at the time of the incident, the TV station reported.
