Coronavirus: Total US COVID-19 cases surpass 14M as death toll tops 275K

Total novel coronavirus cases in the United States soared past 14 million on Thursday, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.

The latest figures represent the fourth consecutive six-day cycle in which U.S. cases have swelled by 1 million new cases and the first time U.S. cases have exceeded 20% of the global death toll.

The United States’ 14,053,183 cumulative cases reported Thursday represent nearly 22% of the nearly 65 million global cases.

Virus-related deaths in the United States swelled Thursday to 275,201, yet still represent about 18% of the slightly more than 1.5 million COVID-19 fatalities recorded to date.

Meanwhile, California’s 1,275,350 total cases leapfrogged Texas’ 1,272,695 cases, followed closely by Florida with 1,029,030 cases. Six other states have each reported at least 410,000 cases, including Illinois, New York, Georgia, Ohio, Wisconsin and Michigan.
