Iowa motorcyclist killed when kayak falls from trailer

GUTTENBERG, Iowa — A motorcyclist died Sunday when he was hit by a kayak that fell from a trailer, authorities said.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, John Thein, 75, of Guttenberg, was killed in the crash, the Telegraph Herald of Dubuque reported.

Thein was killed on a road in Allamakee County, south of Rossville in northeastern Iowa, the newspaper reported.

Investigators said Thein was traveling northbound at about 10:50 a.m. CDT and was approaching a southbound pickup driven by Andrew Wroble, 69, of Harpers Ferry, which was pulling a trailer loaded with kayaks, the Telegraph Herald reported.

One of the kayaks fell from the trailer and hit Thein’s motorcycle, causing the fatal crash, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The crash remains under investigation, authorities said.
