The museum, which has been closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, is scheduled to reopen on May 5. The X-wing will be visible to visitors as it goes through the restoration process.

Once restorations are complete, the X-wing will be moved to the National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall and will be installed outside the Albert Einstein Planetarium starting next year, the museum said in a news release.

“Despite taking place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars introduced generations of fans here on Earth to outer space as a setting for adventure and exploration,” Margaret Weitekamp, space history chair of the museum, said. “All air and space milestones begin with inspiration, and science fiction so often provides that spark — the iconic X-wing displayed amid our other spacecraft celebrates the journey from imagination to achievement.”

This is the first long-term display of a Star Wars movie prop since the museum hosted the “Star Wars: The Magic of Myth” exhibit in 1997.

The museum is also home to the USS Enterprise from “Star Trek,” which went off display on Oct. 7, 2019, when the “Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall” closed for renovations. It will return when work is done, the museum said.
