ESPN analyst believes Seahawks will release former Super Bowl champion this month

ESPN analyst John Clayton went on the “Brock and Salk” show in Seattle and talked about a potential cut the Seahawks could be making this month. He believes that the Seahawks will cut Super Bowl champion Michael Bennett this month despite having no real deadline or incentive to do so.

“By Saturday, I don’t know if they really do anything but I think at some point they’re just going to let him go sometime this month,” Clayton told the “Brock an Salk” show on Wednesday. “Maybe think about a trade but it may be hard to trade that $10 million a year contract particularly knowing — it’s almost like Aqib Talib in Denver — most people think they’re going to let Bennett go. Most people think they’re going to let Aqib Talib go.

“But my guess would be to clear out cap room Michael Bennett will be released because they can do it at any time.”

It doesn’t necessarily make sense to cut Bennett right now because neither of the two options for releasing Bennett necessarily help the team in 2018. If the Seahawks cut him with a June 1 designation as Clayton suggested, they won’t receive the cap relief until June 1 when free agency will be wrapped up. If they cut him regularly, they’ll only clear just over $2 million in cap space. That’s really not that much money saved in the grand scheme of things so it seems like odd timing that they would release him this month.

Waiting until March — if not next year even — would probably be the wise decision considering free agency begins then and more information will be available on potential guys to sign.
